Political turbulence has struck the Patriotic Alliance (PA) as Deputy President Kenny Kunene faces suspension from the party and tenders his resignation from his official roles in the City of Johannesburg. This follows serious allegations linked to his presence at the home of an alleged member of a murder syndicate.

In an official letter dated 25 July 2025, PA President Gayton McKenzie announced Kunene’s suspension from his duties as Deputy President. The letter, addressed to Secretary-General Chinelle Stevens, cited “a public perception that his provided reasons for being found at the home of an alleged member of a murder syndicate should be tested.”

While no formal charges have been confirmed, the PA leadership emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust and internal accountability. Kunene reportedly agreed to cooperate fully with a legal investigation and voluntarily stepped aside from all official capacities in the party pending the outcome.

On the same day, Kunene addressed two formal resignation letters one to the Speaker of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, and another to Executive Mayor Dada Morero. In both letters, Kunene confirmed his resignation as a Proportional Representation Councillor for the PA and as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, with immediate effect.

“I am stepping aside from public life, for a period, while my party satisfies itself as to certain allegations that have been raised

against me, which are unfounded,” Kunene wrote.

The letter further stated, “I have nevertheless agreed it would be in the public interest for me to await the clearing of my name before considering a return to public service and duty.” Kunene, who has been a prominent and controversial figure in South African politics, reflected on his contributions to Johannesburg during his tenure. He cited efforts to improve transport infrastructure, challenge inefficiencies, and address what he called the systemic rot within our institutions.

The resignation marks a significant moment for the Patriotic Alliance, which has recently been gaining traction in various municipalities. The party’s decision to suspend a senior leader over unresolved allegations underscores a possible shift towards internal transparency and accountability. Though political analysts may interpret it as damage control amid growing scrutiny.

McKenzie called on fellow members to remain steadfast during this challenging period. Hinting at the potential reputational stakes for the PA ahead of the 2026 local elections. With an investigation underway and Kunene temporarily stepping out of the political spotlight.

The coming weeks may prove crucial in shaping the trajectory of the Patriotic Alliance’s leadership credibility. As the investigation unfolds, both the party and the public await further clarity on the allegations and Kunene’s potential return to political life.
