Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso remained tight-lipped about the
absence of star players Khuliso Mudau, Lucas Ribeiro, and Peter Shalulile, following
their emphatic 4-0 MTN8 quarter-final win over Richards Bay.
Iqraam Rayners bagged a brace, with an own goal by Simphiwe Mcineka and a late
strike from Siyabonga Mabena sealing the convincing victory. Despite the strong
performance, questions loomed over the unavailability of key squad members,
especially as Ribeiro and Shalulile continue to be linked with possible transfers. Mudau
has also not featured during pre-season.
Cardoso declined to elaborate on the situation, only noting that Thapelo Morena missed
the match due to a minor injury. “It’s nothing serious, but he had a small injury,” the
coach explained.
He emphasized his focus on solutions over problems, stating, “As a coach, I always
want the team as complete as possible. But if I dwell on issues, I won’t be able to lead
or motivate the team effectively.”
While acknowledging the ideal scenario would have been starting the season with a full-
strength squad, Cardoso expressed confidence in the club’s leadership to resolve the
matters in due time. “Mamelodi Sundowns will always maintain the high standards
expected. Those in charge will handle the situation properly,” he concluded.
The victory sets Sundowns up for a strong cup run, but the uncertainty around key
Players remain a talking point.
