The National Gambling Board (NGB) has raised concern about the growing surge in illegal online gambling in South Africa, warning citizens to avoid unlicensed websites as enforcement efforts intensify. The move, announced in collaboration with Provincial Licensing Authorities (PLAs) and law enforcement agencies, comes amid a sharp increase in unlawful gambling platforms targeting local consumers.

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau revealed that at least 90 online gambling websites are currently operating illegally in the country. According to the NGB, many of these platforms disregard South African gambling laws and consumer protection measures, exposing players to unfair practices and financial risks.

Acting CEO of the NGB, Lungile Dukwana, stressed the watchdog’s firm stance: “Online gambling is unlawful and unacceptable. Through targeted enforcement, inter-agency cooperation and public education, we are protecting South Africans from illegal gambling harm, unfair operators, and illicit financial flows,” said Lungile Dukwana.

The board noted that illegal online gambling has grown rapidly, fuelled by economic pressures, offshore operators, and the accessibility of unlicensed platforms, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. To combat this, the NGB works with international regulators to address offenders, while also partnering with local law enforcement, financial institutions, and internet service providers to block access to illegal sites.

Other enforcement measures include tracing illicit financial transactions, disrupting illegal platforms, and conducting raids on unlicensed internet cafes and gambling establishments. The NGB reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of South Africa’s gambling sector and ensuring that gambling remains safe, fair, and fully licensed.
