The National Empowerment Fund (NEF) in the Northern Cape has revealed that women-owned businesses are among its most reliable clients, with many proving capable of repaying loans on time, reinvesting in their companies, and creating jobs in their communities.
The NEF says it remains committed to supporting women venturing into the business sector and encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to seek its assistance. NEF Regional Manager, Kgatliso Manake, highlighted the resilience and commitment of women entrepreneurs:
“What I have personally found out is that women entrepreneurs really pay us back. Most importantly, they reinvest the proceeds that they make, they buy more stock and they also employ more staff, as well. What we have found as the National Empowerment Fund is that really, when you empower a woman, you really do empower the whole community” he said.
One shining example is Onkabetse Civils and Mining, established in 2012. The company supplies earthmoving equipment for mines, road construction, storm water, and sewer projects. With over R8 million in funding from the NEF, the business has remained stable and continues to provide employment opportunities.
Business owner Maria Mooketsi acknowledged that the entrepreneurial journey comes with challenges but emphasized perseverance and continuous learning.
“There are some challenges in terms of running a business. It is not easy, but we are truly dedicated and have the patience to overcome the challenges we face. With the knowledge we possess, we strive every day to improve. It starts with believing in yourself. Learning does not end in school; we learn every day,” said Business owner Maria Mooketsi.
The NEF’s track record with women-owned businesses highlights the vital role female entrepreneurs play in building sustainable enterprises and uplifting communities across the Northern Cape.
