The National Consumer Commission (NCC) will return to KwaZulu-Natal for another series of surprise inspections to ensure that companies comply with the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). The verdict comes after inspections last week in Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg, Durban CBD, Springfield, Inanda, Umlazi, and Pavilion Mall, where investigators discovered widespread noncompliance with product labelling rules under Section 24 of the CPA.

The inspections were conducted in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Regulator of Compulsory Specifications. They discovered expired commodities, things labeled in other languages, and harmful items that were still being sold to customers.

According to NCC spokeswoman Phetho Ntaba, further unannounced visits are planned to evaluate customer experiences and hold vendors accountable. Ntaba stated that depending on the degree of infractions, the NCC may issue compliance notifications or refer cases to the Consumer Tribunal for further action.
