Ghanaians Protest Against Nigerian Migrants Over Illegal Residency Concerns

Hundreds of Ghanaians took to the streets this week in a protest against illegal Nigerian migrants, calling for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and claiming that their presence is destroying the country.

Ghananian protesters carried banners demanding that the government “give us our country back”. Expressing frustration over perceived social, economic, and security impacts caused by undocumented foreigners. They argued that illegal migration has strained public services and local job opportunities, while fueling resentment within communities.

Some demonstrators accused Nigerian nationals of engaging in unlawful activities, including unlicensed businesses, fraud, and other criminal offenses. Protest leaders urged authorities to take immediate action including deportations and tighter border controls.

The protests, largely peaceful but vocally charged highlighting growing tensions between local populations and migrant communities in West Africa. Warnings are that such demonstrations could escalate if governments fail to balance human rights obligations with local concerns.

While the Ghanaian government has not yet released an official response to this latest protest. Authorities have previously pledged to regulate immigration, verify residency permits, and cooperate with neighboring countries to address illegal migration.

Civil society organizations emphasize that solutions should be both fair and sustainable, encouraging dialogue between communities to prevent xenophobic violence and promote coexistence.

The protests in Accra come amid increasing scrutiny across West Africa over migration, labor, and border control. Illustrating the complex challenges nations face in managing cross-border populations.
