Nene eyes a breakthrough medal at the world championships

South African 400m champion Zakithi Nene is confident he is primed to win his first major international medal when the World Athletics Championships begin in Tokyo on Saturday, running until 13 September.
Nene, who reclaimed his national title in Potchefstroom earlier this year, has been in superb form throughout the season and is seen as one of the event’s top contenders. On the Diamond League circuit, he impressed with podium finishes in Rome and London before a hamstring setback sidelined him from the Brussels and Zurich finals. Now fully fit, the 27-year-old says he is determined to emulate Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk by bringing home silverware in the 400m.
“So much pressure, but I’m in a very good position,” Nene said. “I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t confident that I can step on the track and be competitive.”
Nene underlined his credentials earlier this year with a blistering 43.73-second run at the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya. The performance not only crowned him world leader for the season but also established him as the second-fastest South African ever over the distance.
He attributes his rise to a fresh outlook and mental shift. After three consecutive semifinal exits at major championships, Nene believes this season’s consistency and confidence have placed him on the brink of a career-defining breakthrough.
“It’s been more like a breakthrough season just enjoying my running and finding myself again on the circuit,” he said. “Paris last year hit hard. At 26, I expected more, but I’ve changed my approach. I’m stronger, running faster, and it’s showing on the track.”
With momentum, fitness, and belief on his side, Nene heads into Tokyo determined to turn promise into a podium finish.
