The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has announced former Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Liam Jacobs as its official mayoral candidate for the City of Cape Town ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
The move marks a significant political shift for Jacobs, who previously served as a DA Member of Parliament before parting ways with the party. His selection by the PA underscores the party’s growing ambitions to challenge the DA’s dominance in Cape Town and broaden its support base across the Western Cape.
PA leader Gayton McKenzie praised Jacobs’s experience and local connections, describing him as the right figure to lead the party’s push in the metro. “Liam Jacobs understands the people of Cape Town and their struggles. He has the courage to stand up for communities that have long been ignored,” McKenzie said.
Jacobs, in accepting the nomination, vowed to prioritise service delivery, housing, and crime prevention if elected. “Cape Town deserves a government that puts residents first, not politics. My mission is to make this city work for everyone, not just the privileged few,” he said.
The Patriotic Alliance has steadily expanded its footprint nationally, capitalising on coalition politics in several municipalities. Its decision to field a strong candidate in Cape Town signals an intent to directly contest the DA in its traditional stronghold.
The DA, which has governed Cape Town since 2006, is expected to put up a stiff defence of its majority. Analysts say Jacobs’s candidacy could attract disillusioned voters, especially in communities where the PA has built influence through grassroots mobilisation.
