The Minister of Police, Mr. Firoz Cachalia, alongside the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, officially handed over new helicopters and armoured vehicles to specialised units within the organisation on Friday.

The handover ceremony took place at the SAPS Tshwane Academy in Pretoria and was attended by senior police officials, government representatives, and members of the specialised units set to benefit from the advanced equipment.

Speaking at the event, Minister Cachalia emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting the SAPS with the tools and resources needed to effectively combat crime and maintain public safety.

“Today marks a significant step in enhancing our operational readiness. These additional resources will go a long way in strengthening our specialised units, improving response times, and ultimately ensuring safer communities,” said Cachalia.

General Masemola echoed the Minister’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of modern equipment in addressing complex criminal threats, particularly those involving organised crime, armed robberies, and violent protests.

“Specialised units such as the Tactical Response Teams and the National Intervention Unit require mobility, air support, and protection to operate effectively in high-risk environments,” said Masemola. He added that the helicopters and armoured vehicles will greatly enhance their operational capabilities.

The new helicopters are expected to improve aerial surveillance, rapid deployment, and pursuit operations. While the armoured vehicles will provide enhanced protection for officers in dangerous situations.

This latest investment is part of the SAPS’s broader strategy to improve visibility and law enforcement effectiveness in high-crime areas, as well as to support ongoing efforts in intelligence-led policing. The event concluded with a demonstration of the newly acquired assets, showcasing their capabilities to the gathered media and dignitaries.

SAPS reaffirmed its commitment to building safer communities and restoring public confidence in policing through visible, well-equipped, and professional law enforcement.
