Proteas Women’s coach Mandla Mashimbyi has praised his team’s remarkable growth and unity following their historic appearance in the ICC ODI World Cup final, the first in South Africa’s history. The team returned to Johannesburg on Tuesday after finishing runners-up, losing to India by 52 runs in Mumbai.

Speaking to Media addressing Mashimbyi said that the experience of reaching the final has not only strengthened individual players but also deepened the team’s collective spirit. “I am overwhelmed by the fact that I have seen people grow as individuals. I have seen a team that is willing to unite, and they now understand how a united front can make miracles happen,” he said.

Mashimbyi believes this achievement has provided the Proteas with a valuable foundation ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup. “Now there is a reference point for that unity, which is good for the team going forward. We will believe a little more, and from a skillset point of view, I will do everything in my power to ensure that when we get to England, we are ready,” he added.

One of the standout performances during the tournament was the opening partnership between captain Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits in the semifinal against England. The duo shared a 116-run stand, laying a strong platform for South Africa’s commanding total and eventual victory.

Having been in charge for 11 months, Mashimbyi expressed confidence in his players’ growing trust in one another. “Partnerships are a team responsibility. Whenever you bat or bowl, you must work for and with your teammates. Partnerships win matches, and that is something we have been very good at,” he said.

He emphasized that the team’s success lies in collaboration and mutual belief. “When two batters are in, we can stretch the game and put teams under pressure. That is exemplary of what we are trying to build with this team.”

The Proteas Women’s World Cup journey has not only made history but also set the tone for a confident and united squad ahead of future international challenges.
