Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that South Africa will not pursue any additional friendly matches ahead of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting the team has already had ample competitive exposure.

South Africa, drawn into Group B alongside Angola, Egypt and Zambia, is expected to announce its final 23-man squad in early December before assembling for a pre-tournament camp in Tshwane. Despite speculation that more warm-up fixtures might be added following the recent 3–1 victory over Zambia in Gqeberha, Broos made it clear that such plans are off the table.

Broos explained that the squad has played extensively against African opposition in recent years and does not require further matches to understand the demands of continental football. He believes additional games would offer little tactical benefit and could disrupt the team’s conditioning before the tournament.

The coach noted that the situation will differ next year when South Africa shifts focus to World Cup preparations, which will require a broader range of opponents and a refreshed approach. For now, however, his priority is ensuring the squad reaches full sharpness before their opening AFCON clash.

Reflecting on the previous tournament, where Bafana Bafana stumbled in their first match, Broos stressed the importance of starting strongly. He views the opener against Angola in Marrakesh as crucial to setting the tone for the group stage.

Winning the first game, he said, provides a significant advantage and helps avoid unnecessary pressure in later fixtures. Broos is determined not to repeat the pattern of chasing results after an early setback, a scenario that complicated South Africa’s 2024 campaign.

With preparations streamlined and a clear focus on readiness, Broos is confident his team can begin the tournament on the front foot and navigate Group B with greater control.
