Alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is set to take the stand today before the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee investigating claims of corruption and political interference within South Africa’s justice system. In an unprecedented move, the hearings have been relocated to Kgoši Mampuru II Correctional Centre, where Matlala is currently awaiting trial for attempted murder.
Allegations levelled against Matlala
Matlala, whose name has surfaced in connection with multi-million rand tender scandals, alleged links to senior SAPS officials, and the R2 billion Tembisa Hospital looting, is considered a key witness in the committee’s probe. His testimony is expected to shed light on allegations that criminal networks have infiltrated law enforcement and influenced high-level decisions.

The committee chair confirmed that the relocation was driven by security concerns, given the suspects’ high-profile status and ongoing criminal proceedings. Despite being in maximum security, Correctional Services has assured that Matlala will receive full comfort and dietary provisions during the hearings a decision that has sparked public debate over VIP treatment for accused kingpins.
His legal team had sought a postponement, citing poor prison conditions and insufficient preparation time, but the committee dismissed the request, insisting that the testimony proceed as scheduled. Other witnesses expected to appear include SAPS CFO Lt. Gen. Puleng Dimpane and senior police officials.
The hearings come amid growing pressure on Parliament to address claims of systemic corruption and restore public confidence in the justice system. Matlala’s testimony could either expose deep-rooted criminal influence or trigger a political storm if names of prominent figures emerge.
