A major leadership contest is quietly taking shape within the ANC in the Eastern Cape. The Provincial Secretary, Lulama Ngcukayitobi is increasingly being mentioned as a potential challenger for the influential position of provincial chairperson.

Ngcukayitobi, a former educator in the Department of Basic Education and a seasoned organiser within ANC ranks. Is positioning himself for the top provincial post as the organisation edges closer to its next elective conference.

His growing profile comes at a time when current chairperson, Oscar Mabuyane is widely expected to seek a third term. Setting the stage for what insiders describe as a defining moment for the party in the province.

As internal debates intensify, Ngcukayitobi’s name has begun circulating more frequently in branch and regional discussions. Supporters present him as a symbol of renewal in a province grappling with organisational fatigue, governance concerns, and public dissatisfaction.

With more than 30 years of experience in the ANC. Ngcukayitobi is regarded as a disciplined and methodical leader who has served the movement at branch, regional and provincial levels.

Those familiar with his leadership style describe him as measured and consultative. A sharp contrast, some argue to the entrenched factional battles that have dominated ANC politics in recent years.

His political grounding is closely tied to public service. As a former teacher, Ngcukayitobi was exposed first-hand to the systemic challenges facing public education, particularly in rural and impoverished communities.

The role as a director in local government further strengthened his understanding of governance, service delivery, and grassroots economic development.

Within ANC structures, he has built a reputation as an advocate for organisational renewal and ethical leadership. Consistently calling for a return to the movement’s founding values.

He is associated with strong positions against corruption, patronage networks and the abuse of power. While supporting progressive policy debates, including proposals around social protection and a Basic Income Grant for the unemployed.

The emerging contest is increasingly framed as a choice between continuity and change. With Ngcukayitobi viewed by some as a leader capable of reshaping the province’s political culture.

His background in youth and student formations has also earned him support among those who believe the ANC must reconnect with young people facing unemployment, limited access to education, and economic exclusion.

While discussions around his candidacy remain informal and no official announcements have been made. Political observers say the momentum around Ngcukayitobi’s name reflects growing unease within the party and a desire for fresh leadership direction.

Clarity is expected to emerge as ANC internal processes unfold and potential candidates begin to openly engage. But one thing is becoming clear that the race for the ANC Eastern Cape chairpersonship is far from settled.
