Internal investigation has revealed that a human resources official within the Department of Basic Education (DBE), was responsible for the leak of the 2025 National Senior Certificate examination papers.
According to information emerging from the probe, the official allegedly accessed the confidential matric examination papers and unlawfully handed them to their son. The son is said to have then sold the papers to fellow learners ahead of the examinations. Compromising the integrity of the national assessment process.
The scandal has sent shockwaves through the education sector. Raising serious concerns about internal controls and the safeguarding of sensitive examination material.
Matric examinations are regarded as one of the most critical milestones in South Africa’s education system. Determining access to higher education and employment opportunities for thousands of learners each year.
According to eNCAnews, sources close to the investigation say the irregularity was uncovered after reports surfaced of learners having prior knowledge of exam content.
This prompted authorities to trace the origin of the leak, ultimately leading to the identification of the DBE official. The Department of Basic Education has condemned the incident. Describing it as a serious breach of trust and ethics.
Disciplinary action against the implicated official is expected, while criminal charges are also being considered against all those involved in the distribution and purchase of the leaked papers.
Education officials have reassured the public that measures are being taken to protect the credibility of the 2025 matric results. Including possible rewrites of affected subjects and a review of security protocols.
The department has further warned that any learners found to have knowingly benefited from the leaked examination papers could face severe consequences, including the nullification of their results.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the leak. Ensuring accountability at all levels.
