Amapanyaza (Gauteng Traffic Wardens) Disrupt Cable Theft Operation an R25 Near Reitvlei River

The Gauteng Traffic Wardens (Infrastructure Unit) were dispatched to patrol the R25 Spookheis Bush area as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public infrastructure from criminal activities. The unit, trained to monitor and respond to threats against infrastructure, was conducting routine surveillance when they encountered two individuals engaged in illegal activity.

While patrolling near the Reitvlei River, the wardens spotted two suspects who were actively cutting Transnet railway cables—a crucial component of the national transport network. Upon realizing they had been noticed, the suspects abandoned their illegal operation and fled the scene on foot. Despite the sudden escape, the wardens acted swiftly to assess the situation and secure any evidence left behind.

Upon closer inspection, authorities discovered multiple rolls of tampered aluminum railway cables, presumably prepared for illicit resale. These cables are vital to South Africa’s railway system, and their theft has long been a serious concern due to its impact on transportation, safety, and economic activity. The damaged cables were immediately seized and handed over to the Olifantsfontein Police Station for further investigation.

Local law enforcement has since initiated an inquiry to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects. This incident highlights the ongoing battle against infrastructure-related crime and the crucial role played by dedicated patrol teams in deterring such offenses. Authorities continue to urge the public to report suspicious activities in an effort to protect vital national assets from further harm.
