R5 Billion Leratong Smart City project launched to transform Mogale City

by Kelebogile Matlou

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for Human Settlements Tasneem Motara, and Mogale City Mayor Lucky Sele officially launched the R5 billion Leratong Smart City Project, an ambitious development set to transform the west of Johannesburg with a massive mixed-use urban hub.

The project, located near Randfontein Road and the Leratong Hospital, is said to feature more than 15,000 mixed-income housing units and a 35,000 m² regional shopping center. The first phase has already seen R150 million invested, with construction due to begin by the end of June 2025. The completion and official opening are scheduled for November 2026.

The development is a result of a public-private partnership between Mogale City Local Municipality and Trendville Investments, in collaboration with property developer McCormick Property Development. The project is expected to create 2,500 construction jobs and around 750 permanent jobs during its operational phase.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi emphasized the project’s alignment with government efforts to build sustainable communities and curb crime through proper urban planning. “We do not create opportunities through people who want to impose themselves, we do so through proper municipal and community frameworks,” Lesufi stated. He called for community unity and commitment to fighting crime as the project unfolds.

Mogale City Mayor Lucky Sele highlighted the municipality’s commitment to building liveable, inclusive communities. “The new project is a direct result of Mogale City’s spatial vision, which is founded on equity, redress, and inclusive growth. The provincial government is supporting the municipality to realise this dream,” Sele said.

The Leratong Smart City will integrate housing, retail, healthcare, public transport, and educational facilities. The development is expected to help bridge apartheid-era spatial divides by providing quality infrastructure close to economic hubs.

The first major commercial feature of the development will be a modern shopping centre, designed to boost local economic activity and support township entrepreneurs. In addition to the mall, plans include the development of schools, a private hospital, green spaces, and upgraded roads and transport networks.

Councillor Kabelo Motlhope of Ward 5 thanked community members for their attendance and support at the launch event. “Your participation marks the beginning of a brighter future for us all. Together, let us work hand in hand to create jobs, business opportunities, and a sustainable, prosperous community for everyone,” he said.
