Floyd Shivambu left in political limbo as MK Party finalizes parliamentary list

Former MK Party Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu is currently out of the political spotlight after being demoted and left off of the party’s most recent parliamentary list.

Shivambu’s name is noticeably missing from the list transmitted to Parliament ahead of Thursday’s final deadline for party list modifications, even though the MK Party still has eight open seats in the National Assembly.

The internal party dynamics and leadership rivalries may be at play, with some speculating that Shivambu’s outspoken style and past associations have made him a politically inconvenient figure for the MK leadership. Since his political move from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to MK, the Zulu nation and those in the party never see eye to eye.  Stressing that he is there to take their positions therefore he was not welcomed.

The MK Party, which made a strong showing in the recent national elections, currently holds 58 seats in Parliament but has yet to fill its full allocation of 66. The party has until Thursday to finalize its parliamentary list. Whether Shivambu will be named among the final appointees remains unclear.

Shivambu’s reputation has rapidly declined.   Prior to his abrupt removal from his post as Secretary-General last week and transfer to Parliament, which was widely viewed as a demotion, he was a prominent strategist and the party’s public face.   Since he has not been assigned a definitive position among the MK Party’s current crop of MPs, his future within the party currently appears uncertain.
