Controversy erupts as Qiniso labels Nkateko a ‘Shaangan’ amid Zulu tribalism debate

by Mathipa Phishgo
In South Africa, a recent remark made by Qiniso Cibane, the recently appointed national convenor of the MK Youth League, has sparked a flurry of discussion and condemnation.  Cibane called Nkateko Mkhabela, the national coordinator of the MK Youth League, a “Shaangan from Limpopo,” at a party function in Durban on June 16. Many have taken this comment as a racist a insult.

Cibane made these statements to support using isiZulu during the event rather than using English as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT).  “Comrades, discipline Nkateko is a Limpopo Shaangan.  Another speaker may speak in isiZulu, so you will need to understand if you cannot stand hearing it,” Cibane said.

The term “Shaangan” is frequently used disparagingly to refer to the Tsonga people, especially those from Limpopo, and is viewed negatively by many members of the community.  The episode has sparked debate regarding the continuation of tribalism in South African politics as well as intra-party unity.  Cibane supporters see the remark as a reflection of deeper problems inside the African National Congress (ANC) and its connected organisations, while others contend that it was stated in jest and should not be taken seriously.

Critics contend that these kinds of statements exacerbate tensions between South Africa’s many ethnic groupings and jeopardise attempts to bring the country together.  Regarding the event, the MK Party, to which Cibane and Mkhabela are both members, has not yet released an official statement. Nonetheless, there is increasing pressure on the party’s leadership to confront the issue and restate its dedication to respect and inclusivity for all South Africans, regardless of their ethnic heritage.

Many are advocating for a more comprehensive discussion of tribalism in South African politics and culture as the issue rages on.  The event is a sobering reminder of the difficulties still facing the creation of a genuinely inclusive and cohesive country.
