Over 20 Star Line buses torched at Mabopane Depot, police investigating cause

23 Star Line Bus Company buses were allegedly on fire at the company’s depot in Mabopane, which is located beside Soshanguve Giant Stadium, Gauteng. The dramatic blaze broke out in the late hours of June 17 and quickly devoured a substantial area of the depot before emergency personnel could get the fire under control.
Preliminary reports indicate that firefighters’ prompt action prevented at least 14 buses from being destroyed in the fire. The extent of the financial loss is still being determined, and the harm is still severe despite these attempts.

“There was a grassfire and two of the many private buses parked inside the deport were also involved in fire. The fire was spreading quickly towards other buses, as they were parked closely together,” stated a statement issued by City of Tshwane Emergency Operations.
The Mabopane Fire Station personnel had to call for backup. Rosslyn Fire Station and Wonderboom Fire Station were dispatched with more resources. Two fire engines, two foam tender, an aerial ladder, and a district commander were available to stop the fire.
It is still unknown what caused the fire. Arson is not yet ruled out as part of the ongoing investigation, according to Gauteng police Brigadier Nomsa Mbele, a police spokesperson, stated “We can confirm that a fire at the Mabopane depot early this morning destroyed more than 20 buses. Our forensic team is on the scene and they are investigating every possibilities, including the possibility of foul play.”
Although there have been no recorded fatalities or injuries, the tragedy has rocked the neighbourhood and caused disruptions to commuter services in the area. Star Line Bus company has not yet issued an official comment. Sources from the company have stated that while the damage is being evaluated, operations will be temporarily redirected and reduced.
This is not the first time that mysterious flames have targeted Gauteng’s public transit system. The public is being urged by police officials to come forward with any information that could help with the investigation.
