Orlando Pirates secure Yanela Mbuthuma in surprise transfer deal

by Lwandiso Simanga
Orlando Pirates have completed the signing of forward Yanela Mbuthuma from Richards Bay FC, bolstering their squad ahead of the upcoming season. The move comes as a surprise, particularly because Richards Bay had previously insisted the 23-year-old was not for sale, especially after recently extending his contract for five years.
Despite the club’s firm stance, sources confirm that Mbuthuma has signed with the Soweto giants. He becomes the second Richards Bay player to join the Buccaneers this transfer window, following the earlier arrival of midfielder Nkosikhona Ndaba. There is speculation the deals may be linked, although this remains unconfirmed.

Mbuthuma’s transfer follows an impressive season where he netted six goals in 27 appearances across all competitions. His performance played a key role in Richards Bay’s turnaround, as the team climbed into the top eight after a shaky start. In response, the club had offered long-term deals to retain their top talent.
However, it appears Pirates presented an irresistible offer, leading to a change in stance from the KwaZulu-Natal side. In anticipation of the departure, Richards Bay have already reinforced their squad by signing veteran Malawian striker Gabadinho Mhango, recently released by Marumo Gallants.
Mbuthuma’s addition highlights Pirates’ intent to strengthen their attack as they prepare for a competitive campaign, with more signings expected to be announced soon.
