The All Blacks have unveiled their first squad of 2025, naming 33 players along with two injury cover replacements for the upcoming home Test series against France. The announcement was made at Coastal Rugby Club, the home ground of the three Barrett brothers: Beauden, Scott, and Jordie who were all selected.
Head coach Scott Robertson, joined by assistants Scott Hansen and Jason Ryan, explained the challenges of finalizing the squad. Robertson emphasized the importance of consistency, skill under pressure, and how players complement the wider group. “You think about the full 23, not just the starting 15,” he said, noting that strong Super Rugby performances played a major role in selection.
The coaches were especially enthusiastic about the debutantes. Ryan highlighted the impressive form and character of new forwards like Ollie Norris, Fabian Holland, Brodie McAllister, and Du’Plessis Kirifi. “They’ve all earned it,” Ryan said. “You need real character when the contest is at its hottest.”

Robertson pointed to the flexibility in his forward selections, with several players able to cover multiple roles. The loose forward mix, featuring both Ardie Savea and Kirifi, was chosen for its power at the breakdown and ability to create turnovers.
Hansen noted the backline selections are designed to bring fresh energy and expression. He praised the journey of Timoci Tavatavanawai, whose path through Tasman, Moana Pasifika, and the Highlanders earned him a shot at the All Blacks jersey.
With a strong blend of experience and new blood, the All Blacks coaching team believes this squad is ready to rise to the challenge. “There’s great balance,” Robertson said, “and the competition for spots is exactly what we want.”
