Local hero cleans the streets and inspires hope in the Krugersdorp Community

For the past five years, Michael Seekonelo has been making a visible difference in his community, armed with nothing but his passion for change and a broom in hand. Volunteering his time and energy, Michael has taken it upon himself to clean the streets, local schools, and public spaces in an effort to restore pride and dignity to his neighborhood.

“I am driven because I noticed that our youth are on drugs, some are losing their minds, some are unemployed, and our neighborhood is a disaster. I felt that the community was drowning,” said Michael.

Michael began his journey to change by picking up litter and cleaning areas that had long been neglected. Over the years, he has worked alone without funding or formal support, simply because he loves his community and believes it deserves better. “Since I started doing this, I have not received help from anyone. But I have been consistent because I believe in what I am doing,” he said.

While his cleaning efforts have brought noticeable improvements, including a safer and cleaner Joslovo Drive, Michael continues to face significant challenges. “I created a WhatsApp group to communicate with community members about cleaning, but people expected money from me. Every time I ask for help, they come up with excuses,” Michael said.

Despite these setbacks, Michael remains committed. One of his dreams is to turn the regularly cleaned area into a community garden, but due to a lack of seeds and financial support, this dream remains on hold. “We need dustbins so people stop littering, and we need funds to plant and beautify the space,” he said.

Michael’s long-term vision includes launching his own cleaning business, complete with uniforms and a team that can help reduce unemployment and serve the wider town. “I want to create jobs, provide food and blankets for the homeless, and show young people that we can rebuild our community together,” he said.

He hopes to one day host community events that promote environmental education and raise awareness about the importance of keeping surroundings clean. “Even when people mess up the space I’ve cleaned, I continue because I love this place and I want the next generation to live in a better environment,” Michael said.

Although he once appeared in the Krugersdorp News as a local hero, and his work has trended on social media, Michael says he has yet to receive formal recognition or funding. “I have not taken the next step to register my work yet, but I believe with the right support, we can do more.”

One of his proudest moments is seeing how his work has brought safety and light to previously dark streets. “Elders now feel safe walking to work at 6 a.m. Before, the roads were dark and covered in overgrown trees,” he said.

Michael believes that with more structure, resources, and collaboration, the community can thrive. “We need strong systems to protect our community,” he said. With unwavering determination and a heart full of hope, Michael Seekonelo continues to be a shining example of grassroots change. All he needs now is the support to turn his passion into a sustainable force for good.
