Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal pulled off a stunning 4-3 extra-time victory over European champions Manchester City in the Club World Cup on Monday in Orlando, earning a quarter-final clash with Brazil’s Fluminense.

City took an early lead in the 9th minute through Bernardo Silva, but Al-Hilal turned the game on its head shortly after halftime. Marcos Leonardo equalised from close range, and Malcom added a second just minutes later with a composed finish past Ederson.

Erling Haaland levelled for City in the 55th minute, but the drama was far from over. In extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly’s header from a Ruben Neves corner restored Al-Hilal’s lead, only for Phil Foden to respond with a stunning volley.

Leonardo secured the win in the 112th minute, netting his second goal after Ederson parried Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s header. The match showcased Al-Hilal’s resilience and clinical finishing, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou playing a key role in keeping City at bay during the first half.

“We knew it would be tough, we showed our strength and took our chances,” said Koulibaly.

Despite controlling possession, City were repeatedly undone by Al-Hilal’s swift counterattacks and defensive resolve. The upset marks one of the biggest shocks in Club World Cup history and signals Al-Hilal’s serious intent on the global stage.
