Mbekezeli Mbokazi, a rising star in South African football, has been named in the 23-man squad set to face Zimbabwe and Rwanda in the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Despite only making his first-team debut in March, the Orlando Pirates defender has swiftly established himself as a key figure for both club and country.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, speaking during the squad announcement, emphasised the growth of South African football under his leadership. However, he insisted that players like Mbokazi must now seek greater challenges abroad to continue their development. Broos identified Mbokazi as one of the few players ready for European competition, stating that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) will soon become too easy for the talented defender.

“If you see the quality and the talent of Mbokazi, I am very sorry to Pirates, but this player needs to move on next year,” Broos told SABC Sport. “He will improve further when he faces stronger competition and plays at a higher level. Remaining here will eventually become too comfortable for him because he is already too good.”

Broos highlighted that Mbokazi’s rapid rise and consistent performances have already demonstrated his potential to thrive on bigger stages. The coach believes that exposure to European football will not only benefit Mbokazi’s individual growth but will also elevate the overall standard of the national team.

The move to Europe represents more than just a career milestone for Mbokazi it is a necessary step in unlocking his full potential. Competing against top-tier talent, experiencing different tactical systems, and adapting to the intensity of European football could push him to greater heights.

With the national team aiming for sustained international success, exporting players like Mbokazi to top European leagues is essential. For the young defender, the time to take that leap is now.
