Cape Town Soccer Players Stranded in Spain to Return Home

Authorities in the Western Cape have confirmed that the remaining young soccer
players from Cape Town, who were stranded in Spain, will return home by Thursday.
The group, consisting of 38 people including players and coaches had travelled earlier
this month to participate in the Donosti Cup 2025.
The players, aged between 13 and 19, were left stranded after the BT Football
Academy allegedly failed to cover costs for return flights and accommodation. Among
the group is a 13-year-old from Kraaifontein who has been with the club for two years.
The academy had fielded three teams: under-14, under-19, and a girls’ team.
Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, travelled to
Portugal to assess the situation. The players are currently staying at a hotel in Lisbon.
Mackenzie stated that the provincial government intervened to ensure the children’s
well-being, emphasising that their safety is the top priority.
What began as a European football dream has turned into a distressing experience for
both the players and their families, who have endured days of uncertainty. Despite the
challenges, officials have assured that arrangements are underway for the group’s safe
return.
