Capitec announced the collaboration this week, saying it will allow clients to apply for and renew Smart ID cards and passports at participating branches. The bank says the initiative is aimed at making document access more convenient, especially for those applying for jobs, travelling, or opening bank accounts.
Capitec CEO Graham Lee described the move as the first proof point of the bank’s commitment to working closely with government and the public sector to remove barriers for South Africans. “By combining our technology, branch network, and client-first approach with the Department of Home Affairs’ mandate, we are making essential services faster, simpler, and more accessible for millions from suburbs to rural areas,” said Graham Lee.
The rollout will begin with 10 branches in late 2025, with expansion to 100 branches by early 2026.
How It Will Work
Photo Capture – If no suitable ID photo is on file, clients can use a special Smart ID terminal at select branches.
Biometric Verification – Clients will enter their ID number, have their photo taken, and be verified against DHA’s database in real time.
Collection – Smart IDs will be ready for collection at the same branch within weeks.
Future Expansion – Capitec plans to add app-based services, home delivery, and passport renewals later.
Capitec says this partnership will help modernise DHA’s processes, foster growth, and unlock the country’s potential.
