Chicago Fire have officially secured the signature of highly rated South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, completing a move from Orlando Pirates that strengthens the club’s defensive options for both the short and long term. The 20-year-old has signed a contract running through 2029, with an additional one-year option, signaling the MLS side’s belief in his long-term potential.

Fire Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter expressed strong confidence in the young defender’s abilities and character, praising both his leadership qualities and international pedigree.

“In his young career, he has already shown high potential and proven himself to be a strong leader and competitor on the international level. We expect immediate impact and room to grow in future,” Berhalter said following the announcement.

Mbokazi arrives in Chicago after rising through the ranks at Orlando Pirates, where his maturity, composure, and physical presence earned him recognition as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents. His performances at youth international level further boosted his reputation, drawing attention from overseas clubs before Chicago Fire secured his signature.

The acquisition reflects the club’s ongoing strategy of investing in young, high-upside players capable of contributing immediately while developing into long-term cornerstones of the squad. With Chicago Fire looking to reinforce their defensive stability and build a competitive roster for the seasons ahead, Mbokazi is expected to compete for first-team minutes from the outset.
