Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the signing of Cape Town-born winger Asanele Velebayi on a long-term deal after he was declared a free agent by the Premier Soccer League’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) this week.
The 22-year-old, hailed as a perfect fit for Chiefs’ playing style and culture, had been a long-term transfer target. Chiefs first pursued him before the start of the 2024/25 PSL season, but Cape Town Spurs reportedly demanded R12 million. Spurs were later relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to amateur status, prompting Chiefs to argue Velebayi was eligible for a free transfer.
Spurs disputed this interpretation, but the DRC ruled in Velebayi’s favour, triggering outrage from the Mother City club. Spurs blasted the verdict as “a legal and logical catastrophe,” claiming it undermined contractual law and would discourage investment in youth development.
The decision could still be appealed, but for now, Velebayi is set to make his debut in Chiefs’ DStv Premiership clash against Polokwane City at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.
Chiefs are also pursuing former Spurs forward Luke Baartman, whose eligibility is pending a similar DRC ruling.
