Chupu Mathabata sends ripples in the ANC-Limpopo

Cupu Stanley Mathabatha, the Chairperson of the ANC in Limpopo Province, has announced his immediate decision to step aside from his leadership position.

The move, revealed in a formal letter dated 1 September 2025, was addressed to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula. Citing serious concerns about misconduct and a lack of ANC values within the party’s provincial structures.

Mathabatha, a senior ANC leader and a former Premier in Limpopo. Directed the letter to Cde Fikile Mbalula, the Secretary-General of the ANC, and indirectly implicates the provincial branches in Vhembe and Waterberg.

Where the alleged misconduct is said to have occurred. In his resignation notice, Mathabatha expressed grave discontent. Over what he describes as “concerning misconduct and lack of ANC values” within the provincial organisation.

Particularly in relation to the conduct and processes during regional conferences in Vhembe and Waterberg. The chairperson states that his decision is rooted in a desire to protect his integrity and reputation.

Emphasizing that he cannot condone unethical and un-ANC tendencies under his leadership.The resignation became effective immediately on 1 September 2025, as stated in the dated letter. It marks a significant turning point, in the internal politics of the ANC in Limpopo just as the party gears up for its next electoral conference.
