The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has firmly refuted reports claiming that two runners died during the 2025 edition of the iconic ultra-marathon. In a statement reported by Northglen News, CMA general manager Alain Dalais addressed the misinformation circulating on some digital platforms, clarifying that no fatalities occurred during this year’s race.

“The CMA and its medical team can confirm that no deaths have been recorded at the 2025 event. While a few runners were transported to the hospital for various medical reasons, this is expected in an event of this scale and intensity,” said Dalais.

He emphasized the robustness of the event’s medical and emergency protocols, highlighting the organization’s commitment to runner safety. He also urged the public to avoid misinformation and instead consult official CMA channels for accurate updates. “We completely disassociate ourselves from the false reports and encourage the community to rely on credible sources,” he added.

The clarification comes in light of past incidents, including the death of Mzamo Mthembu from Hollywood bets Athletics Club, who collapsed during the 2022 race and later died in hospital. No such incidents, however, occurred in the 2025 race. The CMA reaffirmed that ensuring the health and safety of all participants remains a top priority and reiterated its call to avoid spreading unverified information.
