Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis may be on the verge of stepping down after a turbulent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign that saw South Africa finish fourth. The defending champions were edged out by Ghana in the bronze medal match, losing 4-3 on penalties.
Appointed in 2018, Ellis guided the team to historic success, but recent tensions within the squad and off-field issues have cast a shadow over her tenure. Reports from the camp in Morocco suggest she is considering resignation upon returning home.
Behind the scenes, challenges have mounted. Several senior players skipped the tournament, and those in camp were reportedly unhappy. Tensions between Ellis and some squad members were evident, with one player describing the environment as “not really nice.” Another mentioned a specific fallout that led one player to avoid camp entirely.
Adding to the strain was Ellis’ own uncertain employment status. Her contract with the South African Football Association (Safa) expired in July 2022, yet she continued to lead the team without a formal agreement. Players also staged a pre-tournament training boycott over unpaid bonuses, further highlighting administrative shortcomings.
Ellis, who earned 32 caps for Banyana between 1993 and 2002, is expected to submit her technical report soon, with speculation that it may include her resignation. Her departure would mark the end of a significant era for South African women’s football.
