Four municipalities cut Eskom debt by over R354 million through first relief write-off
The Northern Cape Provincial Treasury has announced its commitment to supporting municipalities in the province that are still part of the Eskom Municipal Debt Relief Programme. This comes after four municipalities Sol Plaatje, Umsobomvu, Ubuntu, and Siyancuma qualified for the first Eskom debt relief write-off, which will take effect in the first week of September.
Following the intervention of the National Treasury, Eskom agreed to write off one-third of the more than R353 million owed by municipalities. Together, the four qualifying municipalities have managed to reduce their Eskom debt by over R354 million after complying with the strict conditions of the programme.
Provincial Treasury spokesperson, Kgalalelo Matsime, congratulated the municipalities, saying the achievement reflects their commitment to sound financial management and strengthening municipal viability.
