Johannesburg motorists will face substantial traffic delays on Saturday as Gauteng authorities execute large-scale cooperative traffic operations ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
The RTMC, GTP, SAPS, and JMPD have announced that the operation will involve temporary closures and lane restrictions on high-security routes such as the N1, M1, and N12, as well as key roads such as Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, Oxford Road, Jan Smuts Avenue, Winnie Mandela Drive, Hendrick Potgieter Road, Rand Show Road, Nasrec Road, and the Golden Highway.
Authorities asked motorists to carefully plan their trips and take other routes. In Roodepoort, Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan De Wet Road, and Ontdekkers Road are preferred over Hendrick Potgieter Road. In Fourways, Main Road, Cedar Road, and Witkoppen Road are viable choices.
Drivers in the Sandton, Rosebank, and Parktown regions should take side streets such as Corlett Drive, Sandton Drive, and 11th Avenue, which run parallel to Jan Smuts, Oxford, or Rivonia roads.
Alternative routes in southern Johannesburg, such as Riverlea, Nasrec, and Ormonde View, include Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, Crownwood Road, Soweto Highway, N17, Aerodrome Road, and Adcock Ingram Road.
Gauteng authorities stated that the combined operation is part of continuous efforts to improve road safety and compliance. “These measures are essential to enhance public safety, enforce traffic compliance, and support ongoing traffic law enforcement initiatives, including vehicle inspections and congestion management,” according to the press release.
Motorists are recommended to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and take other routes wherever possible. Clear signs, on-site officials, and real-time updates will be provided, with emergency and critical services receiving priority.
