Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has placed Lesiba Arnold Malotana, Head of the Gauteng Department of Health and Wellness, on suspension with immediate effect, citing the need to strengthen governance and accountability in the province’s largest department as Malotana is allegedly involved in the Thembisa Hospital loot.

The Premier has appointed Dr Darion Barclay as the Acting Head of Health and Wellness. Barclay, who currently leads the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), is expected to provide stability and ensure uninterrupted service delivery during the transition.

“Dr Barclay’s appointment underscores the importance of prioritising seamless service delivery in this critical department,” said the Premier’s Office.

In a bid to enhance transparency, Lesufi also announced that performance agreements for all Members of the Executive Council (MECs) will be made public on Thursday, 16 October 2025.

The Gauteng Provincial Government reiterated its support for ongoing investigations by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and other law enforcement bodies into alleged maladministration and irregularities within provincial departments.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to root out maladministration and to uphold the highest standards of accountability and ethical leadership,” the statement concluded.

The suspension marks another major intervention by Lesufi’s administration, which has faced mounting pressure to reform key service delivery portfolios, including health, housing, and transport.
