State Prosecutor Elize Le Roux has revealed a startling message allegedly sent by accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala during ongoing court proceedings at the Joburg High Court earlier on Monday. According to Le Roux, Matlala sent a message to his lawyer asking, “Can I come out of hiding now?”

The message was presented by the prosecution as evidence to suggest that Matlala was deliberately evading authorities prior to his court appearance. Le Roux argued that the wording of the message demonstrates a clear consciousness of guilt and awareness of an ongoing  investigation.

The defence has not yet formally responded to this claim, but legal observers expect Matlala’s attorney to challenge the interpretation of the message, possibly arguing it reflects fear rather than guilt.

The court adjourned shortly after the revelation, with proceedings set to continue as more electronic correspondence is expected to be submitted as evidence.
