The municipality of KwaZulu-Natal confirmed that millions of rand were fraudulently removed from its ABSA bank account on Friday, January 31, 2025. The money, thought to be worth over R30 million, was moved in multiple tranches to unknown accounts.
According to an official statement issued on February 5, 2025, ABSA Bank’s Fraud Division notified the municipality of questionable transactions. The municipality determined that the operations were fraudulent and immediately closed the account to prevent future withdrawals. A criminal case was opened at KwaDukuza Police Station the same day.
The MK Party made the event public after accusing the ANC-run municipality of concealing the fraud. Following public pressure, a special council meeting was set for Thursday, February 6, 2025, to divulge all the details and discuss recovery plans.
Municipal officials have admitted that all payments have been temporarily suspended while investigations continue. This may cause delays in service delivery and influence payments to local suppliers.
The KwaDukuza case joins a growing number of municipal fraud scandals in South Africa, raising severe questions about the financial security and accountability of local governments.
