Vusi Shongwe, a member of parliament for the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP), was allegedly kidnapped in Tembisa, Gauteng on Wednesday. He was apparently forced to withdraw money, prompting major safety concerns among Ad Hoc Committee members investigating criminal infiltration within South Africa’s law enforcement organizations.

According to accounts, Shongwe was abducted together with another unidentified passenger in his vehicle. This event occurred shortly after Shongwe attended the Ad Hoc Committee meetings on Wednesday, where controversial businessman Vusi “Cat” Matlala completed his testimony.
The kidnappers eventually freed Shongwe unharmed.

The MKP confirmed the incident and urged legislative Speaker Thokoza Didiza to protect the safety of Ad Hoc Committee members investigating crime networks reportedly functioning within the South African Police Service, the judiciary, and other law enforcement agencies.

In a letter to Didiza, MKP Chief Whip Collen Makhubele voiced fear for the safety of committee members, particularly those representing the MKP.

“As the MKP’s Chief Whip, I am compelled to address the situation immediately and formally alert your office and the parliamentary administration about major safety concerns that have emerged. These issues were originally mentioned during the Chief Whips Forum, when the Ad Hoc Committee extension was considered, and noted in a letter submitted to your office by the MK Party’s Acting Leader.”

“I regret to inform you that Honorable Vusi Shongwe, an alternate member of the Ad Hoc Committee, was kidnapped on the night of November 26, 2025, together with another person traveling in his vehicle. During the incident, the kidnappers stole all three of his telephones, made threats, and forced him to pay a large quantity of money,” said Makhubela.

According to Makhubele, a case has been lodged at Tembisa Police Station, and investigations are now continuing. Makhubele also urged Didiza to prioritize the subject and improve security for committee members.

“Any additional delays or inability to address these risks endangers our members while also exposing parliament to potential legal and financial implications. I respectfully request that your office submit formal responses outlining the steps that will be taken to address these security concerns immediately. The MK Party remains strong in its commitment to the safety and well-being of our parliamentary members and those participating on the Ad Hoc Committee for the benefit of South Africans,” he stated.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for the Gauteng SAPS, verified the matter. “The case of hijacking and kidnapping has been opened. No arrests have been made yet, and the investigation is ongoing,” she stated.
