Model turning passion into purpose

Omphile Makgoka, 21, from Bakenberg, Limpopo, is proof that passion and perseverance can turn dreams into reality. Her modelling journey began back in Grade 7, and while her first attempt wasn’t perfect, she refused to give up.

Instead, she embraced every challenge as a lesson, building the confidence and resilience that now define her career. A major turning point came in 2023 when she joined Miss Township PTA, an experience she describes as transformative.

“I joined Miss Township PTA because I’ve learned a lot, and I’m still learning,” she says. At the core of her approach is a motto she lives by ‘be yourself, have fun, and aim to win or learn.”

Failure doesn’t discourage her if she doesn’t win a competition, she tries again, determined to improve. What sets Omphile apart in the modelling world is her confidence, her positive attitude, and her willingness to take on new challenges with an open mind.

Looking ahead, she dreams of becoming a leader in the fashion industry by starting her own modelling agency to provide opportunities for young talent. Competing in Miss South Africa is also high on her list of aspirations.

Beyond modelling, Omphile is passionate about women’s empowerment. As a Miss Qhawekazi South Africa finalist, she uses her platform to promote self-love, self-acceptance, and self-worth. She advocates for equal opportunities, rights, and representation, urging society to support organisations that empower women, amplify their voices, and challenge harmful stereotypes.

“Empowered women empower women. When we uplift each other, we contribute to the collective progress of our communities,” she says.

Omphile’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. She has faced self-doubt, criticism, and the challenge of balancing multiple responsibilities, but she overcomes them through self-care, surrounding herself with positivity, and staying focused on her goals. In the next five years, she envisions herself as a confident, compassionate leader, exploring opportunities in fashion, media, or public service, all while continuing to inspire others.

Her advice to aspiring models is simple “be authentic, work hard, and prioritise your well-being. Stay true to yourself and embrace every opportunity to grow.” Grounded in the spirit of Ubuntu, I am because we are, Omphile believes that her success is not just her own, but a step forward for every young person daring to dream.
