New Era Begins: Sibisi to lead Bafana Bafana in explosive Friendlies Showdown
By Lwandiso Simanga
In a move that has caught many by surprise, Orlando Pirates’ defensive anchor, Nkosinathi Sibisi, has been appointed captain of Bafana Bafana ahead of their upcoming friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique.
National team coach Hugo Broos announced the unexpected leadership shift this week, calling it a strategic step in preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to take place later this year. South Africa will square off against Tanzania this Friday in Polokwane, then take on Mozambique next Tuesday in Gauteng.

Sibisi’s elevation to captain comes as Broos aims to fine-tune his squad and test combinations during these warm-up games. A consistent and composed performer in the national setup, Sibisi was pivotal in the team’s impressive third-place finish at the recent AFCON in Ivory Coast. Now, he is being asked to lead a new generation of rising stars.
Among the fresh faces hoping to earn a permanent place in the squad are Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Khulumane Ndamane, and Samukelo Kabini, all receiving their first senior national team call-ups. With Sibisi guiding them, Broos believes this blend of youth and experience could be key to building a strong team for the future.
