There will be no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in the upcoming Betway Premiership season due to unresolved funding issues. Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed during his budget vote speech in parliament that the financing model for VAR has not been finalised.
Earlier, the department announced that R90 million had been allocated for VAR implementation. However, McKenzie indicated that this plan is still under review, citing the importance of ensuring fairness in matches and meeting global standards. He noted that the absence of VAR has affected South Africa’s ability to attract top international teams.

The minister also reiterated his ambition to bring a Formula One Grand Prix back to South Africa, arguing it is vital for the country’s global image. McKenzie assured that private companies, including MTN, MultiChoice, Heineken, and individuals like Johann Rupert, have pledged support, meaning the state will not bear the financial burden.
On domestic development, McKenzie announced over R627 million will be allocated via conditional grants in 2025–26 to support sports federations. These funds will cover employment, equipment, attire for schools and clubs, and training for coaches and officials. An additional R98.5 million will go toward ongoing federation support. McKenzie emphasized that hosting major events and investing in grassroots sports are key to sustaining South Africa’s position on the global sporting stage.
