Nuno Santos may still be adjusting to South African football, but his impact on the continental stage has been nothing short of explosive. With only four league appearances and one outing in the Carling Knockout Cup so far, the midfielder has already delivered three goals and two assists in his first three CAF Champions League matches a run of form that has thrust him into the spotlight and reignited belief in Mamelodi Sundowns’ pursuit of another African title.
Adapting to a new country, league, and football culture is an ongoing challenge for the Portuguese playmaker, but one he is meeting with confidence. “It’s very different, and I’m trying to adapt as fast as I can. I still have to grow, but I think I’m doing pretty well,” he told FARpost.
A major factor in his smooth transition has been the support system around him. Working under compatriot and head coach Miguel Cardoso has provided immediate comfort and clarity. “With a Portuguese coach, it’s easier. He speaks my language and knows how to guide me,” Santos explained. Fellow Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho and Brazilian striker Arthur Sales who is fluent in Portuguese have also helped him settle quickly into the squad.
Still, Santos insists that the club’s ambition was the biggest pull. Sundowns’ stature and hunger for silverware aligned perfectly with his own goals. “They welcomed me very well. This is the biggest club in South Africa and one of the biggest in Africa. The club really wanted me. I want to win everything,” he said.
Focused and driven, Santos has embraced the high standards that define Mamelodi Sundowns. And if his early performances are any indication, he may well become a key figure in their quest for continental glory.
