Opinion | Chiefs’ Pre-Season Loss to Vitesse: A Wake-Up Call, Not a Crisis

By :Lwandiso Simanga
Kaizer Chiefs kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 loss to Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem an early test that revealed both promise and persistent issues. While fans may be disappointed with the result, it’s crucial to focus on what matters in pre-season: squad integration and tactical identity.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi gave several new signings, including Thabiso Monyane and Flavio da Silva, their first run-outs. Reeve Frosler’s stunning long-range opener showed flashes of attacking flair, but lapses in concentration such as an own goal by Dillan Solomons proved costly.
The second half brought wholesale changes and more new faces like Ethan Chislett and Nkanyiso Shinga, signaling Nabi’s intent to assess depth. Yet the late goal from Vitesse’s Andy Visser exposed the team’s need for sharper defending and composure under pressure.
Yes, Chiefs lost. But pre-season is about building chemistry, not banking results. With a new coach and fresh signings, this was merely a step in a longer journey. The performance showed sparks of potential. Now it’s about turning those moments into consistency.
Loss or not, the process has begun. Chiefs fans should watch with patience, not panic.
