Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has reiterated his commitment to rotating his squad throughout the 2025/26 season, stressing that maintaining freshness and balance is essential for sustained success.

Following his team’s recent match against Magesi, Ouaddou defended his decision to make several unexpected changes to the starting lineup. Youngsters Camren Dansin (20), Yanela Mbuthuma (23), and Nkosikhona Ndaba (23) were handed starting roles, while Masindi Nemtajela (24) continued to gain valuable playing time. The coach’s approach has prompted questions regarding the limited appearances of more experienced players such as Tshegofatso Mabasa, Thalente Mbatha, and captain Nkosinathi Sibisi.

Ouaddou explained that fitness and readiness determine his selections. “Players returning from injury need time to regain full fitness. The level of intensity we demand requires players who are completely ready; otherwise, they risk further injury,” he said. The coach highlighted that his squad possesses enough quality to allow for effective rotation, ensuring all players have opportunities to contribute.

“It is vital to evolve the entire group. Having 30 players and using only 18 regularly does not make sense. Rotation keeps players sharp, prevents injuries, and maintains competitiveness,” he added. Ouaddou praised the performances of Dansin and Ndaba, noting their energy and potential, and emphasised the importance of developing younger talents within the team.

Despite their recent exit from the CAF Champions League, Ouaddou affirmed that the setback has not altered the club’s ambitions. “Our goal remains the same to compete in every tournament with the determination to win. The Champions League elimination does not change our focus or objectives,” he stated.

Looking ahead, the Buccaneers are preparing for a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld this weekend. Ouaddou remains confident that his evolving squad will continue to grow stronger as the season progresses.
