Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene has been officially cleared of wrongdoing following an independent investigation into his links with murder-accused businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe, earlier this week.
The probe, conducted by law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, found that Kunene’s presence at Molefe’s Sandton home in July was strictly in his capacity as a media proprietor. At the time, he was accompanying a journalist from his online publication, Africa News Global, to conduct an exclusive interview.
The incident drew widespread criticism after it emerged that Molefe is one of the men charged with the 2022 murder of popular musician Oupa John “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka. Mounting pressure that let Kunene stepping down as a Johannesburg councillor and resigned as the city’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport.
He was also suspended from his PA duties pending the outcome of the probe. According to the findings, no evidence linked Kunene to any criminal conspiracy. Instead, the investigators confirmed his account that he was facilitating a media interview.
“The law firm’s report has vindicated me. I was simply doing my work as a media owner. There was no illegal activity,” Kunene said after the findings were made public. The PA has reinstated Kunene as a City of Johannesburg councillor.
Party leader Gayton McKenzie welcomed the outcome, reaffirming Kunene as the PA’s candidate for Johannesburg mayor ahead of the next elections. “The Patriotic Alliance is satisfied that Kenny Kunene has been cleared of all allegations. We stand firmly behind him,” McKenzie said.
Network Citizens (Netizens) questioned Kunene’s associating with a murder-accused individual. The findings may put the matter to rest at least legally. But, the controversy lingers in the political arena remains to be seen.
