Orlando Pirates kicked off their MTN8 campaign with a solid 2-0 win over Polokwane City, securing a spot in the semi-finals. However, their path to retaining the title has taken a challenging turn they now face reigning league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round.
Despite being defending MTN8 champions, Pirates would likely have preferred to avoid Sundowns, who delivered a commanding performance in their quarterfinal, thrashing Richards Bay 4-0. Iqraam Rayners scored twice, while an own goal and a late strike by Siyabonga Mabena underlined Sundowns’ dominance. With 76% possession, the Pretoria side once again showcased why they remain the benchmark in South African football, having clinched eight consecutive league titles.
Elsewhere, Stellenbosch FC edged AmaZulu 3-2 in a thrilling encounter, while Sekhukhune
United also advanced with a 3-2 win over TS Galaxy. Both matches added excitement to a high-scoring weekend of knockout football. The semi-final matchups will see Orlando Pirates face Mamelodi Sundowns, while Stellenbosch take on Sekhukhune United. Fixture dates are yet to be confirmed.
