Heavy rains have laid bare the poor workmanship of a bridge construction project in Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality, sparking outrage among residents of Wards 33 and 34.
What was meant to be a lifeline infrastructure has instead become a symbol of neglect and incompetence. This week, a truck and a bus were left stranded on the muddy, unfinished road in Maruping an area that has long been promised a tarred road.
Residents say the substandard bridges, now flooded and unsafe, are proof of the contractor’s failure and the municipality’s lack of oversight. Community members have repeatedly raised concerns about the quality of the project, alleging corruption and poor planning.
Yet Ward 33 Councillor Moffat Mathipa has defended the contractor, saying work is ongoing and improvements will be made.
In stark contrast, recently sworn-in Ward 34 Councillor Mahlatse Mathipa has remained silent, fueling speculation and further frustration among residents demanding accountability.
At the time of the publication both the councilors were not avaliable to for a comment. The people of Fetakgomo-Tubatse say they deserve a better road not a gravel maintenance.
