The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has announced a R82 million allocation for the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in South African football. The move, made in partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Premier Soccer League (PSL), is aimed at improving fairness, transparency, and the overall quality of domestic competitions.

Key milestones already achieved include the publication of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for VAR technology, responses from potential service providers, and alignment with FIFA’s Implementation Assistance and Approval Programme (IAAP). SAFA has also established a dedicated VAR project team, reinforcing its commitment to FIFA’s standards of accountability and transparency.

The funding will support project planning, referee training, stadium assessments, and the creation of a VAR Training Centre. A portion of the budget will also be used to enhance stadium connectivity and safety, with benefits extending to emergency communication systems.

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie praised SAFA’s efforts, stating that the rollout of VAR will strengthen the credibility of domestic competitions and address persistent concerns over refereeing decisions. “The nation is eagerly awaiting this system as we continue to see questionable decisions during matches,” he said.

This initiative highlights the Government of National Unity’s commitment to elevating South African football to global standards and “inspiring a nation of winners” through innovation and excellence.
