SIU uncovers new evidence in Mkhizes R150 million Digital Vibes scandal

Former Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize is once again under public scrutiny after the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed new evidence in the ongoing probe into the R150 million Digital Vibes corruption scandal.

The scandal centers around Dr Zweli Mkhize, who served as South Africa’s Health Minister during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also implicated are several Digital Vibes executives and departmental officials accused of manipulating procurement processes, to benefit politically connected individuals.

The SIU’s latest findings suggest that additional funds beyond the initial R150 million may have been channeled through shell companies and personal accounts linked to individuals close to Mkhize.

Reports indicates possible fraud, money laundering, and abuse of public resources under the guise of COVID-19 communication contracts.

The new evidence was made public on September 1, 2025, following a confidential briefing to Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).

This follows a multi-year investigation initiated in 2021.The alleged misconduct took place within the Department of Health, with Digital Vibes contracted to manage public communication campaigns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The contract was allegedly irregular and awarded without proper tender procedures. Digital Vibes scandal is one of South Africa’s most high-profile cases of pandemic-era corruption.

Highlighting weaknesses in government procurement and oversight. The new evidence places Mkhize’s potential return to political life in jeopardy.

Amid speculation of a possible ANC leadership bid ahead of the 2026 elections.The SIU reportedly used forensic financial analysis, subpoenaed bank records, and whistleblower testimonies to trace previously undisclosed transactions.

According to Daily Maverick, these findings could pave the way for criminal charges and asset forfeiture proceedings. As SIU uncovers more damning evidence.

Pressure mounts on law enforcement agencies to act decisively. Mkhize, once a leading contender for top political office, the implications could be career-ending unless he can clear his name.

This has become a symbol of government failure and lack of accountability.
