by Lwandiso Simanga
The South African Springboks launched their 2025 rugby season with a commanding 54-7 victory over Barbarians FC at DHL Stadium in Cape Town. The home side seized control from the outset, building a 19-0 halftime lead and adding six more tries in the second half to seal the emphatic win.
Cheslin Kolbe delivered a standout performance, instrumental in setting up tries for Vincent Tshituka and Lood de Jager. Tshituka crossed the line twice, while Damian de Allende added a final try in the closing minutes. The Springboks made full use of their bench, with substitutes Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Kurt-Lee Arendse, and Manie Libbok all making notable contributions. De Jager also found the try line, rounding off a dominant display by the hosts.

Despite the lopsided score, the Barbarians had a moment of consolation as Melvyn Jaminet scored their only try. The match was a farewell appearance for rugby veterans Sam Cane and Peter O’Mahony, marking the end of their distinguished professional careers. South Africa will now turn its attention to Italy, as it prepares to kick off its official test season next week. This decisive win sets a strong tone for the Springboks’ 2025 campaign, with their blend of experience, depth, and pace on full display.
