Questions surrounding the health of General Dumisani Khumalo were addressed in Parliament this week after EFF President Julius Malema raised the matter during a high-level committee session. “Have you checked up on General Dumisani Khumalo since he went on sick leave?” Malema asked, referencing the senior officer’s recent and sudden absence from his duties.
In response, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola provided a reassuring update, confirming that General Khumalo is recovering well. “I did, honourable chair. He is doing quite well now. We can expect him back soon. It was quite a tragic thing, but I think maybe a week or so and he will be fine,” Masemola stated.
The nature of Khumalo’s illness has not been officially disclosed, but his absence had sparked concern, particularly given his central role in several sensitive investigations and ongoing national security matters.
Khumalo, known for his firm leadership style and decades of service in the SAPS, took sick leave earlier this month. His condition was described by some sources as serious but non-life-threatening. While no formal medical bulletin has been issued, the Police Commissioner’s comments suggest that Khumalo is likely to return to active duty within days, pending medical clearance.
The brief exchange between Malema and Masemola has reignited public interest in the health and wellbeing of senior state officials, especially those involved in critical security operations. More updates on General Khumalo’s return is that he will not be able to return in the coming week, as expected.
